Good Things/Bad Things

Oh my lord, it has been so long! Stupid life and all its problems.

I feel very bad about not talking about my Yuletide fic earlier, because it is WONDERFUL - a really lovely The Absolutely True Diary of a Part-Time Indian (Sherman Alexie) fic, that engages with race and poverty and injustice and ableism and the choices of a very bright young woman trying to work her way through the world.

Mary was only seen in shadows and snippets through Junior's narration in the original book, and I think this fic does a really subtle, brilliant job of bringing those hints to life in a full-rounded, emotionally resonant character.

It's called "How to run away from your house and find your home", and it's by mazily.

My own fic was for the excellent trialia, and it's a Vorkosigan Saga work. She asked for something that dealt with what Miles' grandmother, Princess-and-Countess Olivia Vorbarra Vorkosigan, had thought of the perilous times before Mad Emperor Yuri sent his death squads out.

So I wrote Thorns, a short-piece crammed with canon porn.

In more serious matters, I don't know if I've ever noted it here, but I live in Australia. Due to horrendous and deadly flooding in Queensland, lots of the country is now underwater. A bit of the country bigger than the size of Germany and France combined, in fact.

People have lost their lives, livelihoods, homes, crops, animals, and loved ones. Australia as a whole is facing rising food prices and possible food shortages, but in Queensland the situation is dire.

(I should say that I'm okay, and so all my people in that area. There have been a few close calls, but for the most part my people are just exhausted and numb right now.)

Fandom did what it always does, and rose to the occasion. waltzmatildah is running a fundraiser at her journal, where you can donate in return for fic.

You can find my pledge here. Want me to finish the Odd Jobs series? I can do that! Want a sequel Iron Man/Leverage fic? I can do that too. If you donate, I will deliver.

But if you don't want anything from me, you can have a look at the other many great pledges, and see if there's something there that does take your fancy. You get fic, Queensland gets help, everyone wins.

Dear Yuletide Author

Hurrah for you!

Thank you very much! If there's a story you've been dying to write in these fandoms, and you want to just go for it, please go for it. If not, I have a few suggestions. In terms of general genres I like - AUs, family stories (which um you might be able to see from my requests), awesome ladies kicking ass awesomely, caper stories, and so on.

I like thoughtful, introspective pieces, and fast-paced plotty stuff, romantic fluff, one-liner stuffed comedy, and all things smart, funny, and thinky. I don't object to angst as a character or plot element, but angst for the sake of angst doesn't do much for me. I read het, gen and slash, and can cope with anything from G-rated fluff to hard R-explicit. The one exception is PWP, which doesn't always hit my buttons.

However! I squick really, really hard on dub-con/non-con and incest. If you could avoid those I would be very grateful. I also find -isms endorsed by the text extremely offputting. I don't mean "racism, ableism, etc should be avoided as topics" - I can't quite imagine how one could write an Absolutely True Diary fic without them! - but that when I finish the story I don't want to feel that the story supports isms.

So, onto the fandoms!

Curse Workers

Sam, Cassel, Lila.

SO TELL ME ALL ABOUT YOUR COUSIN I MEAN OBVIOUSLY GIRLFRIEND, CASSEL.

Wow, I was helpful. What I meant from this was that I would love more shenanigans in the school environment with Lila and Cassel. I loved that little scam so much. All other students and teachers in that environment also very welcome - there just wasn't room on the form for them, I guess!

OR Sam needs Cassel's help. Cassel obliges.

OR anything you like!

Gallagher Girls series - Ally Carter

* Cameron Morgan,
* Rebecca Baxter,
* Elizabeth Sutton,
* Macey McHenry

Awesomely awesome girls hanging out being awesomely awesome friends. With spying! I'd love a holiday fic - summer break at Macey's private island, perhaps? Or plotty plottiness, with them Fighting a (maybe unrelated to plot arc) Crime! Or BOTH AT ONCE! OR anything you like!

I also feel that the series has a sad lack of queer characters. Should you want to rectify this, go to!

Mulan (1998)

* Fa Mulan,
* Li Shang,
* Grandmother Fa

I'd basically love any story where Mulan kicks butt and is awesome. With optional kissing. And optional Grandmother Fa telling stories of her own awesome (less sanctioned) buttkicking days.

I feel Grandmother Fa has had interesting times. Outrageous flirting with Shang v. important, of course.

OR anything you like!

Absolutely True Diary of a Part-Time Indian - Sherman Alexie

* Arnold Spirit,
* Mary Spirit,

I feel Mary got a raw deal in the book - we heard of her, but never really got to see her in action. I would love to see pre-book family stuff, with their parents or grandmother, or just the two of them. OR anything you'd like. Arnold is just excellent. No incest, please!

The happiest time of the year

Yuletide!

I wrote the Nadine/Ethan fic Making It for seren_ccd (Faking It, Jenny Crusie). It is basically karaoke and sexy times and interfering fairy goduncles, plus banter. I LIKE BANTER.

I also wrote a Yuletide Madness which apparently didn't get posted, so I'll fiddle with that later.

For me was written the far superior The Sceptre at the Feast (Wimseyverse, Dorothy L. Sayers). It's, uh. I'm not sure how to describe it. It's focused on family and Saint-George and Peter and Harriet and it's beautiful and funny and very, very sad without being angst-laden.

Anyway, the second I'd finished reading it (and stopped crying) I resolved that come New Year I would investigate all this writer's fics and rec them! Except the writer is nineveh_uk. HOLY WOW, BATMAN. I probably don't have to mention that everything she has written is exquisite, especially her Wimseyfic, but I would recommend to newcomers the ever-awesome An extract from The Witch’s Guide to Pregnancy, Birth, and Baby Care, by Alarica Rosier. Chapter Nine: What if my Baby is a Squib?

And because the Yule gods were kind, I ALSO got a cute queer!Saint-George fic from GeorgiaBoy which is delightfully post-canon: The Moths and the Flames

Yuletide Letter

Dear Yuletide Author

Thank you very much! I want to reassure you that I am very easy to please. I chose those fandoms to request because almost anything in them makes me wriggle about in joy, and anything in them written especially for me will probably provoke bed-jumping. So please regard these suggestions as suggestions. If there's a story you've been dying to write in these fandoms, and you want to just go for it, please go for it!

However! I squick really, really hard on non-con and incest. If you could avoid those I would be very grateful.

How'd that happen?

I'm doing Yuletide for the first time this year.

You guys.

LEVERAGE is a Yuletide option.

WWJKD?

turntap2 invented the Star Trek Reboot Art Meme, and promptly filled it to gorgeous effect.

I was delighted! And yet sad. Surely such a meme discriminated against the art-deficient among us? Surely by its very excellence it mocked and taunted those of us who, when taking pencil in hand, are more likely to put out an eye than create anything of merit? I can assure you, at that dark moment I felt my oppression most keenly.

Then I hardened up. I am therefore happy to present to you Em's Star Trek Reboot Art Meme (rendered entirely in stick figures) (PG-13 for language).
AHAHAHAHA OKAY.

So the Star Trek kink meme had this completely awesome prompt:

Short essay section (50 points)

Please apply the techniques of at least one school or theory of literary analysis to any of the following pairings:

Kirk/McCoy
Sulu/Chekov
Spock/Uhura
Spock/Uhura/Kirk

Extra credit will be given for multiple responses.

In my *~*~reallifes~*~* I have been known to dabble with the ol' litcrit, so I gave this a shot.

The things we do

But Take A Body Too was the most intensive research-per-word word piece of fiction I've ever written. So, because I was thinking about it:

The List Of Things We Looked Up:

- Does the Louvre have cafes? What are they called? Where are they located?
- What's an appropriate Vatican-owned piece of art for a dying Catholic to want to see? Where is it located?
- What are the motorways in Italy called?
- What's a poem involving the Trinity that also evokes sexual desire that an elderly English man might know?
- What are the security regulations like for the Vatican? What other rules are in place for visitors?
- Who guards the Vatican?
- Are there bathrooms in the Pinacoteca? (This one went unanswered.)
- How big is Room IX? What else is in there?
- What's that stuff called that she used to cut a hole in the window in the first episode?
- What's a normal Italian breakfast? (It involves a lot of sugar. I approve.)
- What does traditional Southern Baptism require of devotees?
- What do you need to enlist in the Marines? How long is a stint of duty? (We haven't used this yet.)
- What's a distinctive piece of Vatican Art that's in the Pinacoteca and has a name immediately evocative of Christianity?
- What's a middling famous piece of art in the Louvre that an atheist might like? (Didn't use this.)
- Where's the world's gold? Not Fort Knox, right? Die Hard 3 wouldn't lie to us!
- How long is a flight from Heathrow to New York? Actually, make that Heathrow to LA.
- Which Doctor Who episodes were in black and white?
- What do you MEAN, the BBC destroyed them?
- Well, which ones? How much is left?
- What's a John Donne poem with an appropriate line we could use for the title?

That's 29 questions (that I know of - Betty might have done some of which I'm not aware) for 4500 words, which is roughly one question per 150 words.

*considers*

I'm aware that people managed to write fiction before the advent of the search engine. I'm just not sure how.
